Introducing Wi-Fi Calling to keep your conversations going in more places

Enhanced voice calling technology

Now available on your MATE mobile service

Wi-Fi Calling is now available on compatible devices, so you can keep your conversations going in more places. Better still, calling  features such as Voicemail, call waiting or call conference will still work as normal on Wi-Fi calling, so you won’t miss out on important messages or calls.

Why Wi-Fi Calling is useful

Phone calls using a Wi-Fi network

Even with our great mobile network coverage, there may be times where Wi-Fi Calling helps. With a suitable Wi-Fi connection, you can make and receive calls in places with poor signal, like indoors or in rural areas. Wi-Fi Calling also keeps you connected if there’s a mobile outage. Plus, it works overseas – just make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

Less waiting

Seamless call handover

Call dropouts are less of a worry if you move away from your Wi-Fi signal as our service transitions seamlessly between Wi-Fi and the mobile network.

Better multitasking

Wi-Fi calling features

Calling features such as Voicemail, call waiting or call conference will still work as normal on Wi-Fi calling, so you won’t miss out on important messages or calls.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive voice calls using a Wi-Fi network instead of the mobile network. You’ll need a compatible 4G device and a suitable Wi-Fi connection.

Where is Wi-Fi Calling available?

Wi-Fi Calling can be used anywhere with a compatible device and Wi-Fi.

To use Wi-Fi Calling, you’ll need a 4G mobile phone which is Wi-Fi Calling capable and a suitable Wi-Fi network.

The best way to check if your device is capable of Wi-Fi Calling is to visit your phone maker’s website (it may be called Voice over Wi-Fi).

If you have a VoLTE-enabled service, you should also have access to Wi-Fi Calling.

Does it cost extra to use Wi-Fi Calling?

No. There are no extra charges for using Wi-Fi Calling specifically. It uses your Wi-Fi data, not your mobile data.

However, although MATE mobile plans don’t support international roaming, Wi-Fi Calling works when you’re connected to Wi-Fi overseas and therefore may result in other charges as calls are treated as if they’re made from Australia.

  • National calls to Australian numbers are included in your plan

  • International calls are only included if your plan includes them (selected countries)

  • Calls outside your plan’s inclusions are charged at standard rates.

Does Wi-Fi Calling work overseas?

Yes. Wi-Fi Calling works when you’re connected to Wi-Fi overseas and therefore may result in other charges as calls are treated as if they’re made from Australia.

  • National calls to Australian numbers are included in your plan

  • International calls are only included if your plan includes them (selected countries)

  • Calls outside your plan’s inclusions are charged at standard rates.

How do I know when I'm using Wi-Fi Calling?

If you’re using an iPhone, you’ll see Wi-Fi after the carrier name (“Telstra” or “mate.”) in the status bar. Then your calls will use Wi-Fi Calling. When mobile service is available, your iPhone will use it for emergency calls. If you turned on Wi-Fi Calling and mobile service isn’t available, emergency calls might use Wi-Fi calling.

If you’re using an Android device, you’ll see “Internet Call” or “Wi-Fi calling” on the notification screen. When you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, your calls will use your mobile carrier, which will show as “Telstra” or “mate.”

Do I need to enable Wi-Fi Calling on my device?

If you have a compatible device, you don’t have to worry about downloading apps to set up Wi-Fi Calling. You just need to ensure the Wi-Fi network details are set up on your phone and that you are connected to the Wi-Fi network. Then dial as normal. In general, your device will default to Wi-Fi Calling while connected to a suitable Wi-Fi connection.

Will I be able to make calls in areas with no mobile coverage?

Yes, if you are connected to a suitable Wi-Fi connection, you will be able to make Wi-Fi calls in your home or office even in areas with no mobile coverage.

Your phone will make and receive calls over the Wi-Fi network, provided you remain in Wi-Fi coverage all the time.

What happens when I move from mobile coverage to Wi-Fi calling?

Mobile calls handover seamlessly between VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling. If you’re on the 4G network, your call will seamlessly move between the Wi-Fi and 4G.

If there’s no mobile connection available, then your call will drop out when you leave Wi-Fi coverage.

Is Wi-Fi Calling secure?

Yes, your smartphone or tablet must still authenticate with the Telstra Wholesale Network. So, Wi-Fi voice calls are protected by the same secure industry standards as other mobile calls.

Does Voicemail work using Wi-Fi Calling?

Yes, your calling features such as Voicemail, call waiting or call conference will still work as normal on Wi-Fi calling.

Wi-Fi Calling is not working on my device, why?

Wi-Fi Calling is automatically enabled on MATE’s mobile network but requires a compatible handset to work.

If you are unsure if your mobile handset is Wi-Fi Calling compatible, please get in touch with the manufacturer of your device.
