How do I turn on international roaming?

Good news — MATE now supports international roaming! Getting set up is simple. Just add a roaming pack for your destination and enable Data Roaming on your handset. That’s it. Most packs are data only, so great for maps, messaging apps and browsing. If you also need calls and SMS over the mobile network, the Global Voice & Data Pack has you covered.

Step 1: Add a roaming pack

You can add a pack before you leave, schedule it for your travel date, or add one once you’ve arrived. Your 7-day validity period starts upon activation and expires at midnight Sydney time (AEDT) on day 7.

When your pack is added, roaming is automatically switched on at a network level, so there’s nothing extra to do in the app. When adding a pack on arrival, we recommend doing so while connected to Wi-Fi, such as at the airport or your accommodation.

📄 Important documents: Before purchasing a roaming pack, make sure you’ve read the Critical Information Summary and Terms and Conditions.

To add a pack:

  • Open the myMATE app
  • Select your mobile service
  • Tap Add-ons from the menu
  • Choose a roaming pack that suits your destination
  • Set a start date if you want to schedule it for your travel date (optional)
  • Tap Purchase add-on. You’ll get a notification when your pack is active

Each pack lasts 7 days from activation and includes a set amount of roaming data for eligible destinations. Voice calls and SMS are not included and can’t be made using these packs.

Step 2: Enable Data Roaming on your handset

Once your pack is active, open your phone settings and:

  • Turn on Mobile Data
  • Turn on Data Roaming
  • Wait for your device to connect to a supported local network

Once connected, your data usage will come out of your active roaming pack. You can turn off Data Roaming in your handset settings at any time to pause usage.

Note: roaming only works when your mobile service is active and roaming is enabled on your handset. If your service is suspended, roaming won’t be available.

💡 Tip: Data-only packs don’t include voice calls or SMS over the mobile network. If you need those, check out the Global Voice & Data Pack. On a data-only pack and connected to Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi Calling is a handy alternative. Just note that voicemail can’t be accessed on data-only packs, even via Wi-Fi Calling.
