How does international roaming work?

International roaming lets you use your MATE mobile service in selected countries overseas by adding a roaming pack to your service. Packs give you a simple, fixed-price way to stay connected without surprise charges. You choose your pack, add it via the myMATE app and enable Data Roaming on your handset – that’s it.

Most packs are data only, so great for maps, messaging and browsing. If you need calls and SMS over the mobile network as well, the Global Voice & Data Pack has you covered.

Available roaming packs

MATE offers five international roaming packs covering different regions. Each pack lasts 7 days from activation and only works in eligible destinations for that pack.

How to get set up

Getting started with international roaming is straightforward. There are just two steps:

  1. Add a roaming pack via the myMATE app. You can activate it immediately, or schedule it for your travel date. When your pack is added, roaming is automatically switched on at a network level โ€” no separate step needed in the app.
  2. Enable Data Roaming on your handset. Go to Settings > Mobile/Cellular > Data Roaming and turn it on. Once your device connects to a supported local network, your data usage will come out of your active roaming pack.
๐Ÿ’ก Note: Roaming only works when your MATE mobile service is active. If your service is suspended, roaming won’t be available.

Where you can use roaming

The countries available to you depend on the pack you choose. The Global Pack offers the widest coverage with 69 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, North America and the Pacific. The Global Voice & Data Pack covers 34 destinations and is the only pack that includes calls and SMS over the mobile network.

Costs and usage alerts

Each pack has a fixed price with no extra roaming data charges outside the cost of your pack. The cost appears on your next MATE invoice. Packs expire automatically after 7 days and any unused data does not roll over, transfer or receive a refund. You’ll receive alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of your data usage via SMS, email and app push notification.

Calls, SMS and voicemail while roaming

Data-only packs don’t include standard voice calls, SMS or voicemail over the mobile network. If you need these, the Global Voice & Data Pack includes 30 minutes of calls and 30 SMS across 34 destinations. On a data-only pack, you may still be able to make and receive calls via Wi-Fi Calling when connected to Wi-Fi. Note that voicemail can’t be accessed on data-only packs, even via Wi-Fi Calling.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If you’re in an area with mobile coverage while roaming, you should still be able to make an emergency call. Most mobile networks support the global emergency number 112.

Managing your roaming

You’re always in control. You can turn off Data Roaming in your phone settings at any time to pause usage. Once activated, packs can’t be cancelled or refunded, but you can schedule your pack for your travel date so it only starts when you need it.
