Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
Fibre runs all the way to a connection box inside your home. It’s the fastest and most reliable connection type. Find out more about what FTTP is.
Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
Fibre runs to a cabinet in your street, called a node, and your existing copper phone line covers the last stretch. Many Brisbane apartment blocks use a similar setup called Fibre to the Building (FTTB). Here’s more on how FTTN works.
Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
Fibre runs to a pit on the kerb outside your home, and a short copper line connects the rest. With less copper, it’s generally more reliable than FTTN, and most FTTC homes can now upgrade to full fibre.
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
HFC uses the coaxial cable network originally built for pay TV, with fibre carrying data most of the way.

Connection types vary street by street, so two neighbours can have different technology. Here’s the general picture, using nbn Co’s own figures for premises able to order a full fibre upgrade as at November 2024. For your exact address, use the address checker.

Fortitude Valley and the inner city: a mix of apartments and older homes, so connection types vary widely. 35,962 premises could order a fibre upgrade.

Chermside and the northside: 14,982 eligible premises across Brisbane North.
•
Carindale and the eastern suburbs: 44,747 eligible premises, the most of Brisbane’s five city regions.
•
Logan: 33,488 eligible premises across Logan–Beaudesert.
•
Ipswich: 57,724 eligible premises.
•
Redcliffe and Moreton Bay: more than 94,000 eligible premises across Moreton Bay.
•
Growth corridors: new estates are generally built with full fibre, so newer homes are often already on FTTP.
These figures pre-date the July 2026 change below, so more premises can now upgrade.
Can you upgrade to full fibre in Brisbane?
On 1 July 2026, nbn Co removed the requirement for Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) customers to order a high-speed plan (100/40Mbps or above) before upgrading to full fibre. nbn Co says this made around 860,000 FTTC premises newly eligible nationally.
Eligible FTTN premises can upgrade too, though conditions apply. And the shift is well underway: in its FY26 results, nbn Co reported more customers on fibre than copper for the first time, with its fibre base reaching 3.3 million premises.

Can I upgrade to full fibre for free in Brisbane?
Many premises can. From 1 July 2026, NBN removed the requirement to be on a high-speed plan before ordering an FTTC-to-FTTP upgrade, which made around 860,000 premises nationally newly eligible. Eligibility is address-specific, so check yours.
How do I find out what NBN connection my Brisbane address has?

How long does nbn activation take?
For first-time nbn connections, activation appointments may take 9-19 business days. If your home has already been connected to the nbn, a technician is not required to set up your MATE home internet connection. All we need to do is simply transfer the service. Usually, this will only take a few hours. However, in some cases, it may take up to 3 business days.
