The 5G mobile network can hold up to 10 times the information-carrying capacity of the current 4G network.
Therefore, the 5G mobile network provides users with higher mobile data speeds¹, improved connection ability, and lower latency.

Do I need a 5G device/handset to access 5G?
Yes. You will require a compatible 5G phone that is not locked to another provider, and a MATE 5G-enabled mobile plan. You’ll also need to be in a Telstra Wholesale 5G coverage area.

The network capability of MATE’s Soul Mates 150GB 5G plan has access to download speeds up to a speed cap of 250Mbps on 4G and 5G. When connected to 5G, typical download speeds are 10Mbps up to the speed cap of 250Mbps, while when connected to 4G typical download speeds are 5Mbps to 180Mbps. Upload speeds on 4G and 5G will typically be 1 to 40Mbps. On 3G*, typical download speeds are 1.1 to 20Mbps and typical upload speeds are 300kbps to 3Mbps.

How do 5G speeds compare to 4G and 3G?
On 4G, typical download speeds are 10 to 100Mbps, and upload speeds are 1 to 40Mbps, in 4G coverage areas. On 3G*, typical download speeds are 1.1 to 20Mbps, and typical upload speeds are 300kbps to 3Mbps.
In addition to faster speeds, 5G adds more capacity and aims to deliver improved latency. There’s more room for everyone on the network so connected devices can maintain higher data speeds even in crowded areas.
How do I get 5G?
To get 5G with MATE, you need:
• A 5G compatible mobile handset and/or device that is not locked to another provider
• A MATE 5G mobile plan
• To be in a 5G coverage area

The Telstra Wholesale Mobile Network coverage area reaches more than 98.8% of the Australian population with 3G*, 4G or 5G and covers more than 1.6m square kilometres of the Australian landmass.
The service provides 4G coverage reaching at least 98.7% of the Australian population and at least 75% with 5G.
* At end June 2024 3G network services will cease.
What if I don't have 5G?
Don’t fret! 5G devices will still use 4G, or 3G if 4G is unavailable. You won’t notice this, and it won’t affect your experience.
How will I know I have 5G coverage on my handset?
If you are in a 5G coverage area, a 5G symbol should appear on your device.
What happens when I am not in an area with 5G coverage?
Outside of 5G coverage, 5G devices will continue to use our 4G network, or 3G if 4G is unavailable.
Can a 5G phone use 4G?
Yes, when you are not in a 5G coverage zone, your phone will switch to 4G automatically.
Do I need a new SIM card?
No, you can use your existing MATE SIM card, whether you have a physical SIM card or an eSIM, in a 5G phone even when you change your plan from a 4G plan to a 5G plan. There is no need to change your SIM.
Where can I purchase a 5G device?
5G phones can be purchased from all leading Australian electronics retailers, including JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and more.
Are there any data limits on MATE’s 5G mobile plans?

Started on a 12mb connection. It was so easy to get connected. Mates had the job done in 1 day when optus had taken weeks until I gave up. Second month I wanted to go up to 25mb connection and mate explained that well. When I stuffed up the dates mate helped me fix that too (even though it was 100% my stuff up). Couldnt be happier with their customer service and ease of getting connected.

I received the modem within 3 days of the order and the set up was very simple. There was an issue with the NBN box as I use Wireless NBN. The call centre was very helpful. There were no lengthy on holds or overseas call centre experience. The issue was fixed quickly. we are very happy with the service
