FAQs - Everything you need to know about FTTP upgrades

How does Fibre to the Premises work?

Fibre to the Premises, otherwise shortened to FTTP, uses an optic fibre line that runs to an nbn network device (box) that will be installed somewhere inside your home. You then plug your modem/router into the connection device.

To connect to the internet on an FTTP connection, you will require a compatible router with a WAN port that will plug into the nbn NTD.

More information about nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) can be found on the nbn website.

Is FTTP available in my area, and how can I get it?

Simply enter your address above, and we’ll tell you what technology is available at your home and what plans you can get. Alternatively, you can visit nbn’s page here to check your address for eligibility.

Will the installation affect my existing connection?

The nbn technician will install your new Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connection in parallel to your existing connection.

As nbn will be working with a live network, there may be temporary service interruptions during the pre-installation visit and installation appointment.

Once your new FTTP service is up and running, your current connection will be disconnected by MATE within five (5) days.

What are the advantages of higher speed NBN plans?

Higher-speed NBN plans provide a smoother, more reliable online experience, especially for households with multiple users and connected devices. Here’s why upgrading to a faster plan can make a big difference:

  • Faster downloads & uploads – Stream, game, and work without interruptions, with reduced buffering and quicker file transfers.
  • Better for multiple users – If your household has several people streaming, gaming, or working from home, a higher-speed plan helps prevent slowdowns.
  • Improved video quality – Enjoy seamless 4K and HD streaming without buffering, even on multiple screens.
  • Smoother online gaming – Higher speeds and lower latency mean less lag and a better gaming experience.
  • Future-proofing your connection – As internet demands grow, faster speeds ensure your connection keeps up with new technologies and services.

If you are upgrading from FTTC or FTTN, we recommend reading our NBN technology guide, to understand how these technologies can affect your speed and connection.

How long does it take to get connected to the nbn?

If nbn has already been connected at your premises, then the likelihood is that we’ll be able to activate your service within 1 -3 business days once you have placed an order. If nbn has never been connected to your property before, the usual time frames to obtain an activation appointment can vary from up to nine (9) business days to up to 19 business days. This can vary and can be quicker or take longer depending on the workload of the nbn technicians in your area and your properties nbn readiness.

What is the fastest nbn plan you offer?

Flamin’ Fast nbn 1000/50 plan is the fastest internet plan we offer at MATE. With typical busy period speeds of 831Mbps download and 49Mbps upload, it’s built for serious speed and performance.

This plan is perfect for households or businesses with high demands — like 8K video streaming, large file transfers, real-time collaboration, cloud workflows, or heavy-duty online gaming. Whether you’re running a business from home or just want the fastest internet around, Flamin’ Fast has you covered with unlimited data and next-level reliability.

* The Flamin’ Fast nbn 1000/50 plan is available in select areas only. Please check your address to confirm eligibility. Speeds may vary based on your connection type and home setup.

How do I apply the promo code "MATE30" to get my discount?

When you’re signing up for a new nbn internet plan, there’ll be a section during the checkout process after you select your plan where you “add a promo code”.

Simply input “MATE30” there, and the discount will be applied to your monthly bill for the first 6 months.

Please note: MATE30 is available on selected nbn plans for new customers only. For T&Cs, click here.

Are there any hidden fees or charges?

Absolutely not!

Transparency is key for us. The price you see when selecting your plan is what you pay. And remember, there are no lock-in contracts, so you’re free to adjust your services as you see fit without any hidden fees.

How do the "no lock-in contracts" work? Does this mean I can cancel anytime without penalties?

Exactly right! At MATE, we want to keep you because you love our service, not because you’re tied down.

If you decide to leave, you can do so without any exit fees or penalties.
