how does the nbn Fibre Upgrade installation work?

Upgrading to nbn Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) gives you faster and more reliable internet at home. Here’s what you need to know about the installation process.

1. What happens after I order a Fibre Upgrade?

Once you sign up to an eligible Fibre Upgrade plan, we’ll place your order with nbn. nbn will then:

  • Assess your property to confirm eligibility.
  • Schedule your technician appointment(s).
  • Contact you directly (by SMS, email or phone) to confirm dates and times.

Some installations can be done in one visit. Others might need a second appointment, depending on how complex the work is.

2. What should I expect during the installation?

An nbn technician will visit your home and complete the upgrade by installing:

  • An nbn utility box (outside your home)
  • An nbn connection box (inside your home)

They will discuss placement with you on the day and get your approval before starting any work.

3. Will I need to be home?

Yes. An adult over 18 needs to be home during the appointment. They will give access and confirm installation details with the technician.

4. What if I’m renting?

If you’re renting, ask your landlord or property manager for permission first. This is important because the installation might need drilling or minor digging.

5. How long does the installation take?

Installations usually take 2 to 4 hours. However, they might take longer based on your property. If the technician can’t finish the job in one visit, nbn will set up a follow-up appointment.

6. Will there be interruptions to my current service?

Usually, your current nbn connection stays active until the upgrade is complete. There may be a short downtime during the switch over, but we’ll keep you in the loop.

7. Is there anything else I need to do?

  • Keep pets safe and out of the work area.
  • Make sure power outlets are accessible for the new nbn equipment.
  • Leave any nbn equipment behind when you move out – it’s registered to that address and needs to stay there.
