nbn Service Classes and connection timeframes explained

If we’ve sent you here, your connection has a “Service Class”. It’s a code the nbn uses to describe how ready your address is to be connected, and it tells us roughly how long your connection should take. Find your Service Class below (it’ll be in the email we sent you) to see the typical timeframe and what happens next.

💡 Note: These are typical lead times, not guarantees. Your actual timeframe can vary depending on technician availability, whether equipment needs to be installed, and local demand.

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises)

Service Class Typical timeframe What this means
SC0 Not available yet Your address isn’t ready for an nbn connection, and more work is required before an order can be placed.
SC1 2 to 10 business days An nbn technician will need to install the fibre connection to your home and your nbn connection box.
SC2 2 to 10 business days Fibre has already been installed to your property, but an nbn technician still needs to install your nbn connection box.
SC3 Same day to 1 business day You’re good to go. Your nbn connection box is already installed and working, so in most cases we can activate your service without a technician.

FTTN / FTTB (Fibre to the Node / Building)

Service Class Typical timeframe What this means
SC10 Not available yet Your address isn’t ready for an nbn connection.
SC11 2 to 10 business days An nbn technician will need to complete work on the copper line before your service can be activated. You’ll use your own modem connected to a telephone wall socket.
SC12 2 to 10 business days Your address is almost ready. Some additional network work or a technician visit may still be required before activation.
SC13 Same day Your connection is ready to go. Once your service is activated, plug a compatible modem into your telephone wall socket and we’ll activate your service.

💡 Tip: We’ll always apply for the next available technician appointment unless you’ve asked us for something different.

Will my modem work?

Some connection types let you use your own modem, while others use equipment the nbn installs. If you’re bringing your own, it’s worth checking it’s compatible before your connection date so you’re ready to go the moment your service is active. See what type of modem/router you need for nbn, or for a move, what equipment you need when moving home.
