If one room in your house always drops out, or your WiFi feels fine next to the router but useless everywhere else, you’ve got a dead zone. You’ll see a few common fixes floating around: mesh WiFi, WiFi extenders and powerline adapters. They tackle the same problem in different ways, but they’re not equal, and at MATE we back one of them.
Here’s how all three work, why we recommend mesh WiFi over the other two, and which NBN plan pairs best with it.
What’s the difference between mesh WiFi, extenders and powerline adapters?
- Mesh WiFi uses two or more units that work together as a single network, so your devices move between them without you noticing.
- WiFi extenders pick up your existing WiFi signal and rebroadcast it, usually as a second, separate network.
- Powerline adapters send your internet through your home’s electrical wiring, then broadcast WiFi (or give you a wired port) from a plug in another room.
All three try to get a usable signal into rooms your router struggles to reach. The catch is that only mesh does it without trading away speed or reliability, which is why it’s the option we recommend.
Mesh WiFi vs WiFi extender: what’s the difference?
Mesh and extenders both add coverage, but they behave very differently once they’re set up.
A mesh system creates one seamless network across every unit. Your phone or laptop connects to whichever unit is strongest and switches automatically as you move around, with one network name, one password, and no real drop in speed along the way.
A WiFi extender works differently. Your signal has to travel from your NBN device to your modem or router, and then to the extender, which receives it, processes it and rebroadcasts it. That extra step usually means slower speeds and more dropouts, and it often creates a second network you have to pick manually. It’s why we don’t recommend extenders, even for a single weak room.
Do powerline adapters work?
Sometimes, but it’s a gamble, and it comes down entirely to your home’s electrical wiring. Powerline adapters push data through your existing circuits, so they can perform reasonably when both adapters sit on the same circuit. Older wiring, multiple switchboards or a home that’s been renovated with mixed wiring can slow them right down or stop them working altogether.
Because the results are so unpredictable, and because they can bring the same dropouts and speed issues as extenders, we don’t recommend powerline adapters either. If walls are the real problem, a mesh system is the more reliable fix.

Which is best for a big or double-storey home?
For a large or double-storey home, mesh WiFi is the clear pick. A single router can’t push a strong signal through several walls and floors, and an extender only patches one spot while dragging your speed down. A few mesh units placed through the house give you even coverage on one network, so you can walk from the front door to the back bedroom without dropping out.
Smaller homes and units benefit too. Even if you’ve only got one weak room, a mesh setup handles it without the speed loss and second-network hassle that comes with an extender. Whatever the size of your place, mesh is the option we’d point you to.
Which mesh system should I get?
There’s a mesh system to suit most homes and budgets. Two we’re happy to recommend are:

Will a better internet plan fix my dead zones?
No, and this trips a lot of people up. Your NBN plan sets how much speed comes into your home. Your WiFi setup decides how well that speed reaches every room. A faster plan won’t push your signal through an extra wall.
That said, the two work together. There’s not much point running a mesh system on a plan that’s already stretched thin. As a rough guide:
- NBN 50 suits smaller households and pairs well with a compact mesh setup.
- NBN 100 is a solid baseline for most homes running mesh, with a few people streaming, gaming or on video calls.
- NBN 500 or above suits busy households with multiple mesh units, smart home gear and lots of devices going at once.

Common mistakes when fixing WiFi dead zones
- Reaching for an extender. It rebroadcasts your signal, which usually means slower speeds and more dropouts.
- Betting on a powerline adapter. Whether it works depends on your home’s wiring, so it’s a gamble.
- Ignoring building materials. Brick, concrete and metal-backed insulation block WiFi more than distance does.
- Hiding the router in a corner or cupboard. Central placement helps before you add any extra gear.
- Chasing a faster plan instead of better coverage. If devices near the router are fast but a back room isn’t, the fix is hardware, not speed.
Final thoughts
Dead zones are annoying, but the fix doesn’t have to be. WiFi extenders and powerline adapters promise to help, but they often bring dropouts and slower speeds, which is why we don’t recommend them.
