Fixed Wireless is one of the ways nbn delivers internet to homes and businesses in rural and regional Australia. Instead of using underground cables, this setup sends a signal from an nbn tower (up to 14km away) to an antenna installed on your roof.
How does it work?
Once your address is deemed serviceable, an nbn technician will complete a signal test. If the signal is good, they’ll install:
- An outdoor antenna (usually roof-mounted)
- An indoor nbn connection box (also called an NTD)
You’ll need a router with a WAN port to connect to the NTD and get online. You can BYO a compatible device or purchase one from MATE.
How fast is Fixed Wireless?
Speeds can vary depending on:
- Distance from the tower
- Obstacles like trees or buildings
- Number of users in the area
- Time of day (peak hour congestion)
What if I need a backup?
During a power outage or if your Fixed Wireless is down, you can use a mobile hotspot or your mobile phone as a backup connection.
Fixed Wireless can even handle activities like online gaming and streaming, with better latency and larger data limits than satellite services.
