The nbn connection box (also known as the Network Termination Device or NTD) is the device that connects your home to the nbn network for certain technologies.
Who has an nbn connection box?
- If you’re on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP), you’ll have an nbn connection box installed inside your home.
- If you’re on Fixed Wireless, your property will also have a connection box installed inside (linked to an antenna on the roof).
- If you’re on Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), your nbn connection box looks like a small cable modem.
- Customers on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Building (FTTB) don’t have an nbn connection box – instead, you plug your VDSL modem directly into the telephone wall socket.
What does the nbn connection box do?
It links your premises to the nbn network. You plug your modem/router into the correct port on the nbn connection box to get connected.
What do they look like?
- FTTP: Wall-mounted indoor box with up to 4 yellow UNI-D ports – see nbn’s FTTP connection box guide.
- Fixed Wireless: Indoor box with power and signal lights – connected to an outdoor antenna. See the nbn Fixed Wireless user guide.
- HFC: Small modem-like device – generally has only one active port. More info via nbn’s HFC connection guide.
- FTTC: Small white box that plugs into your telephone wall socket and then connects to your modem/router. Learn more at nbn’s FTTC guide.
