What type of router do I need for fast nbn plans?

If you have a faster plan like No Worries nbn 500/50, Fair Dinkum nbn 750/50 or Flamin’ Fast nbn 1000/100, you need the right modem/router. This way, you can enjoy the speeds you’re paying for.

Minimum router requirements

To get the most out of your high-speed nbn plan, your modem/router should have:

  • A Gigabit WAN port (labelled 10/100/1000 Mbps or Gigabit Ethernet)
  • Gigabit LAN ports to support fast wired connections
  • Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for the best wireless performance
  • At least Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for reliable speeds

💡 Tip: If your current router is more than five years old, it might not support your plan’s full speed – especially on Wi-Fi.

Also, use CAT6 or better Ethernet cables between your nbn equipment and modem/router to help reduce speed loss.

Mesh Wi-Fi systems

Got a big home or thick walls causing patchy Wi-Fi? A mesh Wi-Fi system is a top option. It uses multiple units to spread your connection evenly across the house.

💡 Tip: Mesh Wi-Fi is ideal for multi-storey homes or spaces with brick walls – it keeps your connection strong across every room.
