What is nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)?

Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) is an nbn connection type that uses the existing ‘pay TV’ or cable network for the final stretch of the connection to your home.

An HFC line runs from a nearby fibre node and connects to your premises via coaxial cable. This setup requires an nbn network device (also called an HFC modem), which is typically installed where the HFC line enters your home.

To get online, you’ll need a router with a WAN port that plugs into the nbn HFC modem. You can BYO a compatible modem/router or purchase one from us during sign-up.

💡 Tip: Unlike some other nbn connection types, HFC does not use your phone socket – your router connects directly to the nbn modem via Ethernet.
