Why do you use SMS verification when I transfer my mobile number to MATE?

At MATE, we take your privacy and safety very seriously.

We must follow legislated rules when customers transfer (port) their phone numbers from another provider to MATE.

To protect against mobile number fraud and prevent scammers from hijacking your number, we use two-factor authentication (2FA) during the transfer process. It’s a simple extra step to make sure that the request is coming from you – and only you.

💡 Tip: 2FA is a form of multi-factor authentication (MFA) that’s more secure than a password alone – it relies on something only you can access, like your phone.

Here’s how it works when you request to transfer your mobile number to MATE:

  1. We’ll send an SMS to the mobile number you’ve asked us to transfer, which includes a unique authorisation code.
  2. You must enter this code under ‘My Orders’ in the myMATE app or self-care portal for the transfer to go ahead.

This code is valid for 24 hours and must only be shared with MATE staff. If you didn’t request the transfer, please contact us straight away.
