Sharing internet across a big household can feel like a nightly tug of war. The good news is that the fix is usually cheaper than you’d think, and often it isn’t your nbn plan at all. Here’s how to work out what’s really slowing things down, and what to change first.

Why a Busy Household Feels Slow (and Why It’s Usually Not Your Plan)

When everyone’s home and online, three things tend to get in the way.

1. Too many devices fighting over the same WiFi

Your router shares its WiFi airtime between every connected device. The more phones, tablets, TVs, consoles and smart gadgets you add, the less each one gets, even if your plan has plenty of speed to go around.

2. Upload fills up first

Video calls, cloud photo backups and security cameras all send data out of your home. Most plans give you far less upload than download, so it’s often the first thing to max out.

3. The WiFi, not the nbn line

The nbn itself is generally holding up well. In its final Measuring Broadband Australia report in June 2026, the ACCC found fixed-line nbn services were delivering 99.4% of their plan’s download speed in the busy evening hours. So if your internet crawls when everyone gets home, the bottleneck is most likely inside your house: an older router, a poorly placed modem, or too many devices crowded onto one WiFi band.

Evening slowdowns can have other causes too, and we cover those in our guide to why your nbn slows down at night.

How Much Speed Does a Big Household Actually Need?

It’s tempting to pick a plan based on how many people live with you. If calls drop out whenever someone else is uploading, upload is your bottleneck.

Fix Your WiFi Before You Upgrade Your Plan

Put your router in the right spot

Your router works best central in the home, up high and out in the open. If you’ve got a double-storey home, thick brick walls or dead spots in several rooms, mesh WiFi is the answer. It uses several units working together as one network to spread the signal. Remember, a faster plan won’t reach any further than your WiFi does.

Wire in the TV and console

The TV and gaming console are often the biggest data users in the house, and they don’t move. Plug them into your router with an Ethernet cable and you’ll free up WiFi for everyone else. If you use mesh, connecting the units to each other by cable (called wired backhaul) can help too.

Share the Connection Fairly

Prioritise what matters with QoS

Quality of Service (QoS) lets your router give priority to certain devices or activities, like video calls or a work laptop. Look in your router’s app or settings for QoS, Prioritisation or Traffic Control, and set your work devices to high priority. It’s often more effective than jumping up a speed tier.

Schedule the big downloads

Game updates and cloud backups don’t need to happen at 7pm. You don’t need a separate WiFi network for the kids, but grouping their devices makes these controls much easier to manage.

Share Houses vs Families: A Different Problem

Families mostly argue about speed. Share houses also have to sort out who pays and who’s responsible when people move on.

Whose name is on the account? Usually one person holds the account and everyone else chips in. That’s the simplest setup, but it puts the responsibility on one person.

Avoid lock-in contracts. Housemates come and go, and no one should be stuck with a 24-month contract in their name. MATE has no lock-in contracts and no plan change fees, so the account holder isn’t stuck if the household changes.

Bring your own modem. If someone already has a compatible modem, you can use it with MATE.
