It helps you quickly identify who\u2019s messaging you. It\u2019s not a phone number, it&#8217;s a name tag for the sender.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is there a new register?<\/h3>\n<p>From <span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">1 July 2026<\/span>, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is launching a new SMS\/MMS Sender ID Register to help protect Australians from scam texts.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only verified sender names will appear as normal.<\/li>\n<li>Messages from unregistered sender names will show as &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Unverified<\/span>&#8220;, so you know to be cautious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This aims to reduce scam messages pretending to be from trusted brands like banks, telcos or government services.<\/p>\n<h3>What does this mean for you?<\/h3>\n<p>Not much \u2013 here\u2019s what to expect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Messages from registered sender names will look and behave just like normal.<\/li>\n<li>Messages from unregistered names will say &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Unverified<\/span>&#8220;, which could be a scam (but not always).<\/li>\n<li>Some legit businesses may still be getting set up when the register launches, so not all unverified messages are dodgy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 1em; background-color: #d7f6e6; border-left: 5px solid #00b26b;\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Helpful tip\"><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">\ud83d\udca1 Tip:<\/span> The Sender ID Register is just one way to stay protected from scams \u2014 always look out for suspicious links or requests for personal info.<\/div>\n<h3>Will this change which SMS messages I get?<\/h3>\n<p>For most people, no.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll still receive texts from your bank, telco or other trusted services if they\u2019ve registered their sender IDs.<\/p>\n<p>If not, their messages will still come through but will be marked &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Unverified<\/span>&#8220;.
