{"id":16217,"date":"2023-02-14T10:04:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T23:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.letsbemates.com.au\/mate\/?post_type=faq&#038;p=16217"},"modified":"2025-08-18T14:46:03","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T04:46:03","slug":"what-do-i-need-to-transfer-my-mobile-number","status":"publish","type":"faq","link":"https:\/\/www.letsbemates.com.au\/mate\/faq\/what-do-i-need-to-transfer-my-mobile-number\/","title":{"rendered":"What do I need to transfer my mobile number to MATE?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once you\u2019ve signed up for a MATE mobile service and received your SIM card, you\u2019ll need to log in to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsbemates.com.au\/mate\/mymate-app\/\">myMATE app<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/mymate.letsbemates.com.au\/\">self-care portal<\/a> and head to the <strong>\u2018my orders\u2019<\/strong> section to activate your service.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage, you can choose to bring your existing mobile number with you or get a brand-new one.<\/p>\n<p>To make sure your activation goes smoothly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;ll need your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsbemates.com.au\/mate\/faq\/how-do-i-find-my-account-number-mate-code\/\">MATE account number<\/a> (aka your MATE code).<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re transferring your number from another provider, you\u2019ll also need your current provider\u2019s account number (you\u2019ll usually find this on your bill).<\/li>\n<li>If your existing number is prepaid, you won\u2019t have an account number. Instead, we\u2019ll use the date of birth (DOB) that\u2019s recorded with your current provider.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re not sure whether your number is postpaid or prepaid, check with your current provider:\n<ul>\n<li>Postpaid = you get a bill each month and have an account number.<\/li>\n<li>Prepaid = you recharge when your credit runs out or expires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t cancel your number with your current provider.<\/strong> Cancelling too early means you\u2019ll lose the number and we won\u2019t be able to transfer it to MATE.<\/li>\n<li><strong>After you click \u2018activate\u2019, don\u2019t insert your MATE SIM just yet.<\/strong> Wait until your old provider\u2019s SIM stops working \u2014 that means the transfer is complete. You\u2019ll also get an SMS and email confirming the move to MATE.<\/li>\n<li>Once your number has successfully transferred, it\u2019s a good idea to contact your old provider to make sure they stop billing you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Authorising the number transfer<\/h4>\n<p>To protect you from fraud and keep your number secure, we use a legal two-factor authorisation step before the transfer can go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>When you activate your SIM:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We\u2019ll send a unique authorisation code via SMS to the mobile number you\u2019re transferring.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll need to enter that code in the \u2018My Orders\u2019 section of the myMATE app or self-care portal within 24 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 1em; background-color: #fdecea; border-left: 5px solid #d32f2f;\" role=\"note\" aria-label=\"Important notice\"><strong>\u2757 Alert:<\/strong> That SMS code is part of a legal security check to protect you from scammers trying to hijack your number. If you didn\u2019t request the transfer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsbemates.com.au\/mate\/support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contact us immediately<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>Once connected, your mobile service will be month-to-month with no lock-in contracts.
